The original Red Manor House Coverlet is a remarkable example of historic British appliqué, featuring a central red house surrounded by an assortment of flowers, animals and everyday rural motifs.
Acquired for The Quilters' Guild Museum Collection following its appearance at auction in 2013, the coverlet offers a fascinating glimpse into domestic life and the creativity of an unknown maker.
Each motif has been carefully arranged within its own square block, framed by colourful printed cotton sashing. The intricate appliqué and decorative stitching reflect the skill and imagination of its maker.
Although much of the coverlet's history remains a mystery, its journey is partly documented, including time spent in South Africa before returning to England.
Today, its distinctive motifs continue to inspire contemporary makers through quilting, embroidery and cross stitch.
The coverlet also inspired The Quilters' Guild's first Block of the Month project. Read about the original Red Manor House quilt and the inspiration behind the project
