Inspired by the remarkable Challans Coverlet of 1811, held in The Quilters' Guild Collection, Lincolnshire Posy offers a contemporary interpretation of a historic British textile. The inspiration: The Challans Coverlet (1811)

Measuring 215 × 233 cm, the original Challans Coverlet is an appliqué frame coverlet made from printed dress cottons, with a wide outer border of furnishing fabric.

Its central circular medallion features petal-shaped pieces arranged into a large flower, surrounded by a zigzag-edged square frame and borders of alternating triangles and zigzag shapes.

Embroidered in cross stitch at its centre are the name and date S. Challans 1811.

Although its exact provenance remains uncertain, research has identified Sophia Challans of Lincolnshire, who married Thomas Leake in 1811, as a possible maker.
